Why route segmentation matters so much

A route is not just a total distance. It is a sequence.

That sequence matters because where you place day boundaries determines:

  • when the hardest climbs happen
  • when the biggest descents happen
  • how much load is carried through hard terrain
  • whether difficult sections are grouped or distributed
  • whether the route becomes progressively more manageable or progressively more punishing

This is why campsite placement is one of the highest-leverage planning actions in TRIPS.

A useful planning question

Instead of asking only:

Can I finish this route in N days?

also ask:

Does this specific day structure put the hard work in the right places?

That second question is often more informative.

Practical takeaway

If a plan feels wrong, do not only adjust your assumptions.

Try moving campsites and comparing different day structures. Route segmentation often changes plan quality more than small input tweaks.
