Optional calibration

Use this article for one question only:

Should I bother with calibration right now?

You do not need calibration just to use TRIPS well.

Stay with defaults for now if:

  • you are still learning the planner
  • you do not have much representative FIT data
  • your files are dominated by non-hiking activities
  • the default planner behavior plus honest manual inputs already gives you useful route outputs

Consider calibration if:

  • you have enough representative hiking or backpacking FIT data
  • you want the planner to reflect your own movement patterns more closely
  • the default route outputs are no longer specific enough for your use

What this decision means

Choose calibration only when you want more personalization from recorded FIT history.

Do not use calibration as a substitute for:

  • conservative planning
  • grounded daily limits
  • smart route segmentation
  • field judgment

Bottom line

Start without calibration unless you have a clear reason to add it.

If you decide to use it, go to Calibrate TRIPS with FIT files.

If you want a map of the calibration article set first, read Calibration overview.
